What Is Functional Medicine?

Drawing on Eastern and Western medicine, expert practitioners guide you to health and longevity through practical, personalized prevention and solution. Functional medicine providers spend time listening to you and gathering your medical history. We use this information to identify the root cause(s) of the illness, including triggers such as poor nutrition, stress, toxins, allergens, genetics, and your microbiome (the bacteria living in and on your body).

Once we identify the triggers, we can customize a healthy living plan for you. Your plan will address many aspects of your life, from physical needs, including nutrition, exercise, and sleep, to mental and emotional stressors related to social, work, and community life.

The foundation of functional medicine is the use of food as first-line therapy. The right nutrition, combined with lifestyle and behavioral interventions, will help you take charge of your health.

The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we will experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful, we will find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation, our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we will experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, we will be able to stay happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances.

The Lamrim takes us step-by-step through carefully crafted meditations so we can purposefully nourish the qualities in our mind that lead to our happiness and reduce our painful thoughts and feelings. For example, some of the meditations help us enhance our self-confidence, empathy, or contentment. Others aid us in overcoming distractions, anger, or depression.


In this class, we will go one-by-one through the Lamrim, drawing out how we can personally use these meditations and create our own meditation practice. There will be a special emphasis on the art of meditation and how to really make our meditations effective.

How to live compassionately

Our workouts combine high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength training to develop endurance and muscle all in one. Your body gets an aerobic workout to improve your heart health and endurance, coupled with strength training to build muscle, promote fat loss, and increase your metabolic rate. Our formula is as effacious as it gets.

HIIT alternates short bursts of intense exercise with recovery periods of rest or light activity, like sprinting for 30 seconds then walking for 30 seconds. These spurts of intensity cause your heart rate to go up and down in quick succession, which can boost heart health by lowering your blood pressure and resting heart rate and improving your oxygen capacity and circulation. This also encourages major calorie burn, sometimes as much as 700 to 1,000 calories per class. Your body has to work hard to replenish depleted oxygen from all that heart-pumping HIIT, which means extra calorie and fat burn after the workout.

Our strength training builds muscle through bodyweight exercises, resistance band drills, and weight lifting, says Lemere. Since classes are tailored to specific parts of your body, the strength-training sections might focus on arms and abs, chest and back, or lower body. And weight training benefits more than just your muscles: It can also burn fat, boost your metabolism, and strengthen your bones.

Spending time in nature during our yoga and reiki retreat will release the chatter of the mind. Reiki can get your creative juices flowing, and bring about fresh and exciting concepts. Reiki came to me during a very stressful time, and later brought about a transformation that encouraged me to dedicate my life to helping others. As a part of your retreat, you will have CBT sessions with a Psychologist as well as Biofeedback sessions. Biofeedback sessions help make you more aware of your stress triggers and pick up on the signs of this within your body and deal with these feelings before they go any further. Therapies such as this help make us more self-aware, instead of letting anxiety or bad thoughts snowball and become out of control, you can put techniques in place to combat them early on, and slowly minimize their frequency over time.

The small size of our retreats allows our Psychologists to create custom treatment plans. These are crafted for each client’s unique mental health needs and goals. The tailored treatment plan results from a thorough intake process.


During this meeting, you will review your past mental health and health history with the clinician. This, plus the use of screening tools, helps provide a wealth of details that help form the treatment plan. From this data, they will arrive at a diagnosis, and then design a plan that is unique to your needs.

Types of Evidence-Based Therapies

Mental health treatment uses therapy as the basis for bringing about relief and change. Examples of those used at the mental health retreat include:


CBT - CBT helps you make core changes in the way you respond to a stressor or trigger. You are taught how to take a pause, to reshape your thoughts, and to take constructive action.


DBT - DBT focuses on four areas. These are emotion regulation, to live in the moment, to improve relationships, and to manage stress.


Interpersonal Therapy - These sessions teach new related techniques. You learn how to resolve conflicts, and how to communicate better.


Psychodynamic Therapy - This therapy delves into childhood where old pain points still affect your present quality of life.


Exposure Therapy - If you have a history of trauma, this type of therapy will help to reduce the impact of the traumatic memories.


Therapy sessions are available in both a one-on-one setting or a group setting. If meds will help reduce the symptoms they will be prescribed as part of the treatment plan.

FST is a form of table-based assisted stretching that focuses on the fascia and joint capsule to achieve optimal strength, flexibility, pain relief and performance. It is a pain-free method of stretching, typically performed on a massage table, that can provide almost instant results.


Here are some of the main benefits of FST:


Pain Reduction

Problems with your fascia can cause you actual physical pain. The tightness in your fascia can encourage unnatural motions or postures that increase your odds of minor injuries and unwanted pressure on your nervous system. Those minor injuries, in turn, can encourage even more unnatural motions.


Improve Circulation

Lingering tightness or tension anywhere in your body decreases circulation. By reducing tightness and tension, FST improves blood flow. It helps speed up recovery from exercise by allowing more blood to reach your muscles faster, which improves toxin removal. It improves overall energy by allowing more oxygen to reach your muscles and organs. That additional oxygen can also improve your mental clarity.



People often seek sports medicine, surgery, massage, or stretching to rehab an injury or break up scar tissue, which can be painful. Once that happens, it can further limit your range of motion by making movement painful. Fascial stretch therapy can help loosen or realign the fascia.
